Pedro “Pete” Leal, resident of Edinburg, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2010 of natural causes at Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen.  Mr. Leal was born on January 31, 1924 in San Benito, Texas to Guadalupe Leal and Amada Solis.  He is preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Inez “Chita” Leal, and his daughter, Irma I. Gutierrez, brother, Gilbert Leal, and sister, Antonia Leal.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  Pete was a pillar of his community and was known and admired by many.  Pete served his community and Hidalgo County in many ways; he spent numerous years as Chief Deputy Clerk under the leadership of 3 Hidalgo County Clerks.  He spent many years working tireless hours for Hidalgo County’s Veterans Affairs Office assisting local area Veterans.  He was instrumental in the acquisition of funding for ambulance services to transport Hidalgo County veterans in need of medical assistance to the VA Hospital in San Antonio he was the Chief Organizer of the Hidalgo County Veterans; his work and efforts lead to the development of the MIA/POW monument that graces Memorial Park in East Edinburg.  Pete spent countless hours researching prisoners of war from Edinburg to ensure that they were honored for their sacrifices and courage.  He was a former member of the Veterans Group “40 & 8”, and was a lifetime member of the Alfredo Gonzalez American Legion Post 408. In addition, he had the distinct honor of serving as Justice of the Peace for Hidalgo County.

Pete Leal was known and loved by many.  He was a remarkable and respected man, a true gentleman. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Pete is survived by his son-in-law, Eugenio “Gene” Gutierrez Jr., 3 granddaughters, Dr. Selena (Kirk) Short, Mrs. Maritza (John) Cano, and Alexis Inez (Johnny) Rendon, four great granddaughters, and one great grandson, and many nieces and nephews

Visitation for Mr. Leal will be held today, January 12, 2010 from 2:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg with a rosary to be held at 7:00 p.m.  Christian mass will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg.  Christian burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.  Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
