Medardo Porras III
“All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”
-St. Francis of Assisi
Medardo Porras III, 62, beloved son, brother, and uncle, was reunited with God on Monday, March 20th, 2023 at Abri Rehabilitation Center in Edinburg after courageously battling Lou Gehrig's Disease for several years. He was born on February 25, 1961, to Medardo Porras and Aida Leon Porras in Edinburg, Texas. Medardo was affectionately referred to as “ Bebe” by his family. He was known for his unfailing sense of humor, a love of simple things in life, and an ability to put a smile on the face of anyone he came across.
Medardo graduated from Edinburg High School in 1979. He worked at Hec ‘n’ Bec restaurant for approximately 15 years. In 2005, he graduated from the University of Texas-Pan American with a degree in Philosophy. He was a deep thinker, a wonderer, and a truth seeker. He later worked as an addiction counselor for Palmer Drug Abuse and as a legal assistant where he forged lifelong relationships. He cherished his fellowship with his AA family for 25 years.
Like his father, Bebe was a Dallas Cowboys fan who enjoyed barbecuing and spending time in the open outdoors with his nieces and nephews at the Dos Hermanos ranch in San Manuel. During routine visits to his ranch, Medardo often expressed how he felt at peace in the silence of the Texas wilderness. He also enjoyed competition, never turning down a game of chess, and always relished the opportunity to, in his words, “administer a beating” over the chess board. His deep love for his father’s ranch was evident to all who knew him. It is a place where he and his family created countless memories over the years and a place where his spirit left an indelible mark. He taught us that the simple act of making a fire or walking a well-trodden path could be magic--if we only knew how to look.
Left to treasure his memories are his four siblings: Domingo (Araceli) Porras, Blanca (Francisco) Garza, Maria Victoria Porras, and Javier (Jessica) Porras; nieces and nephews, Crystal (Roy) Perez, Vannesa (Jesus) Garza, Diego Porras, Dante Porras, Daniel Porras, David Porras, Alexa Porras, Andrew Porras, and A.J. Porras; four grand nephews, and countless loving cousins and friends.
The Porras family will be receiving family and friends on Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 5 pm - 8 pm with a Rosary to be prayed at 6 pm at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 24, 2023 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 501 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetary, 1701 East Richardson Road in Edinburg.
