Medardo Porras, Jr., 81, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed to his eternal rest on Thursday, February 8, 2018. The patriarch of the Porras family, Mr. Porras leaves behind a legacy of laughter, zest for life and an immovable faith in God.

Medardo Porras, Jr., was born in Rio Grande City, Texas on Sunday, July 12, 1936. The first son of Medardo and Celia Porras. Mr. Porras was proud of his birthplace and spent his elementary school years in Rio Grande City. At about the age of 10, Mr. Porras; family moved to Weslaco where he spent several more years. By this time, the Porras family had grown to include 4 more children. In about 1950, the Porras moved to a small ranch in San Manuel, Texas. Since San Manuel had no high school, the Porras’ children went to Edinburg High in Edinburg, Texas. Medardo graduated in 1956 from Edinburg, He often talked about the 1956 football team that reached that state championship.

After graduation, Medardo enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was first stationed in Davis Monthan Air Force base in Tucson, Arizona. This is where he met the love of his life. Medardo met Aida during his stay in Tucson and began dating shortly after. Medardo was sent to Territory Guam but returned to Tucson to marry Aida. His family travelled from San Manuel to attend the wedding. A year later, their first son Domingo was born.

After his honorable discharge from the United States Air Force, Medardo and Aida moved to Edinburg where they started their life, raising five children, mindful of being near the church. The Porras were married for 56 years. The five children were Domingo (Araceli) Porras, Blanca (Frank) Garza, Medardo Porras, III, Vicky Porras, and Javier (Jessica) Porras, brothers; Martin and Adan Porras, 12 grandchildren, and 1 great grandson.

Mr. Porras loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Astros but mostly he loved his ranch in San Manuel where he raised cattle for more than 50 years. Medardo had an army of nieces and nephews that adored and respected him. The list of friends he made over a lifetime is not only to numerous to mention but involved all age groups and cultures. Medardo has relatives and cousins from Rio Grande City to Harlingen.

The family wishes to thank the Grupo de Oracion (prayer group) for their lifelong support. Father Christopher Santangelo, SS. CC. and all members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The Porras family will be receiving family and friends on Sunday, February 11, 2018 from 5pm-9pm with a Rosary to be prayed at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic mass will be celebrated on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 10am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 501 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg with Fr. Christopher Santangelo, SS.CC. officiating. Catholic burial will follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, 1701 East Richardson Road in Edinburg. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers: Daniel Porras, Adrian Joaquin Porras, Robert Perez, Saul Porras, Martin Porras Jr. and Manuel Joel Porras. Honorary Pallbearers Dante Porras, Andrew Joaquin Porras, Mateo Villanueva, Diego Porras, Daniel Perez, David Porras.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Fund for the poor.

Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
