EDINBURG — Maria A. Reyes, 63, her hazel eyes closed forever and peacefully on Thursday, May 08, 2014 with her family by her bedside. She was born on December 23, 1950 in Edinburg, Texas to Simon Alonzo, Sr. and Severa Salazar Alonzo. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; Rogelio Rodriguez; grandchildren, Brandon and Nikolas Gonzalez; nephew who she loved like a son, Roberto “Bubba” J. Alonzo; brother, Hector Alonzo; and sister, Emma Alonzo.
Maria is survived by her loving daughter, Cindy (Rodrigo, Jr.) Gonzalez; grandchildren, Tala, Briana and Sera Gonzalez; brothers, Roberto (Cynthia) Alonzo and Simon (Gloria) Alonzo, Jr.; sisters, Sylvia Argo and Emma (Mark) Nesbitt, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and longtime friends for who she dearly loved.
She lived in Edinburg all of her life and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was a very strong independent woman who always worked hard for her family. She loved to dance and listen to all kinds of music, especially to old Tejano music where she would even call the radio station requesting her favorite songs. She loved humming birds, driving around enjoying the sceneries, listening on her police scanner, eating flower seeds and beans, and watching old Cowboy western movies. Her greatest times though, were being with her granddaughters who she loved with all her heart. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched. The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to Dr. Melva Palacios, Dr. Suresh Ratnam, Expert Home Health and Pax Villa Hospice for all their compassionate care giving to their “Mom”.
Her family will receive friends today, Friday, May 9, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00p.m. at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Christian Mass will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian burial will follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be Robert Alonzo, Hector Alonzo, Rodrigo Gonzalez, Sr., Simon Alonzo, J.D. Alonzo and Eric Alonzo. Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
