Maria A. “Ama” Garcia passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at Edinburg Regional Medical Center in Edinburg. Maria, was born on a Friday, November 4, 1927, in San Pablo Pejo, Guanajuato, Mexico to Manuel Hernandez and Maria De La Luz Garcia Hernandez. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; Juan A. Garcia, grandson; Christopher Garcia, brothers; Nicolas Hernandez and Jesus Hernandez, sisters; Abelina Hernandez and Esperanza Hernandez.

Maria is survived by her children; Rafaela (Francisco) Salinas, Antonio (Vicky) Garcia, Margarita (Jose Luis) Garcia, Robert (Tammy) Garcia, Mary (Ruben) Hernandez, Herminio (Aida) Garcia, and Vanessa (Ruben) Guizar, 18 – grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

Ama spent most of her youth in Pejo, Guanajuato, before moving to the United States along with her husband Juan A. Garcia in hopes of establishing a better life for her family. This was accomplished through many hardships and sacrifices including migrant work accompanied by her roles as a wife and mother to her family. Her typical migrant workday would include waking up at 5 AM to prepare meals and prepare the family for work, work out in the fields along with her family and return home and continue to provide for her family. Her hardships and sacrifices did not go unnoticed as her children and grandchildren have succeeded in ways she had never imagined. In her later years, she enjoyed caring for her plants, dressmaking, crocheting, and spending time with her family. Maria was a loving Mother, Grandmother, sister, and will be deeply missed by family and all those whose lives she touched.

Her family will receive friends on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM with a Rosary to be prayed at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Catholic Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1302 East Champion Street in Edinburg. Catholic burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, 1701 East Richardson Road. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be: Antonio Garcia, Ruben Hernandez, Ruben Hernandez, Jr., Herminio Garcia, Roberto Garcia, Jose Luis Garcia and Luke Guizar. Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia, Manager/Funeral Director and Staff of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
