Eugenio “Gene” Pena, Jr., 89, entered eternal rest one day shy of his 90th Birthday on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas. Eugenio was born on September 9, 1921, in Santa Cruz, Starr County, Texas to Eugenio Pena and Daria Farias Pena. He lived in Delmita, Texas most of his life and worked for Smith, International (Drillco) for 25 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Santos and Jesus Pena, sisters; Petra Pena and Arcadia P. Nino, and brother-in-law; Arturo Vale.
Eugenio is survived by his loving wife of 69 years; Otila Garza Pena, sons; Eugenio (Delta) Pena, III, Alfredo (Elma) Pena, Jesus (Lolly) Pena, Robert (Minnie) Pena, and Ricky Pena, daughters; Rosa Moreno, Yolanda (Mike) Malik, Diana (Johnny) Maldonado-Wilson, Sylvia (Larry) Cinco, Gracie (Joe) Falcon, and Cindy (Mark) Haubert, sisters; Celia P. Vale and Oralia P. Narvaez, sister-in-law; Lydia Garza Pena, 28 – grandchildren, 21 – great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, and his favorite cat “Kiki”.
Eugenio proudly served his country in the United States Army during W.W.II. He was a devoted husband to his wonderful caring wife, a wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be missed by his family and all those whose lives he touched.
The Pena family will receive friends today, September 11, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with a holy rosary to be prayed at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Chapel at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg. Christian Mass will be held on Monday, September 12, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian burial with Military Honors will follow to Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas. Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
