On Sunday, July 20th, 2014, Eugenio “Gene” Gutierrez Jr., of Edinburg, Texas passed away peacefully in his sleep with his daughters by his side. Gene is preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Irma L. Gutierrez, of Edinburg; parents, Eugenio and Olivia “Lile” Gutierrez, of Pharr and in-laws, Pedro “Pete” and Inez “Chita” B. Leal, of Edinburg.
Gene is survived by his three girls, Selena (Kirk) Short, Maritza (Juan) Cano and Alexis (Juan Jr.) Rendon; and five beautiful grandchildren. In addition, as the oldest brother of seven, he leaves behind his sisters, Beatrice Gutierrez, of Pharr; Sylvia (Oscar †) Garcia, of Pharr; Emma (Guillermo) Mungia, of Pharr; brothers, Eloy (Yolanda) Gutierrez, of Schertz, TX; Erasmo (Rosie) Gutierrez, of San Juan and Samuel Gutierrez; of San Antonio, TX.
Gene is also survived by many nieces, nephews and treasured family friends.
Most knew him as “Mr. Gutierrez” or “Mr. G.”. An educator and believer in all children. He began his career in education as a Biology teacher in Edcouch-Elsa. In his hometown of Pharr, he served as a school guidance counselor, assistant principal and principal for several years.
Mr. Gutierrez began his career with the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District in 1985 as the Principal for South Middle School. He retired as the district’s school Superintendent in 2011.
Gene devoted his entire life to his family and to educating and molding young minds. He believed in friendships that last a lifetime and a God who is loving, patient, forgiving and kind. A God whose love is so strong, it endures the test of time. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 501 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. Christian Mass will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian burial will follow to Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Edinburg. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be Edward Gutierrez, Michael Garcia, Sam Gutierrez, Jr., Guillermo Mungia, II, Eloy Gutierrez, Jr. and Oscar Garcia, Jr. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made toward Families of SMA by logging onto www.fsma.org. Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia, Manager/Funeral Director of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 E. Kuhn, Edinburg, Texas.
