David "Coach" Chavana

David Arnoldo “Coach” Chavana,73, peacefully entered eternal rest on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at his residence in Edinburg, Texas. He was born on a Tuesday, September 23,1952 in Edinburg, Texas to Jesus Chavana and Lydia Vasquez Chavna. He is preceded in death by his parents.

David is survived by his loving wife of 29 years; Graciela Moreno Chavana, sons; Vito (Erica) Chavana and Noah Chavana, grandson; Trey Chavana, brothers; Jesus Jose (Neida) Chavana, Jaime (Marissa) Chavana, sisters; Diana (Domingo, Jr.) Garza and Norma (Joe Jr.) Guzman as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

David worked for the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District for over 30 years as a Teacher and Coach at the freshman campus and Edinburg North High School. He loved to help our youth and anyone who needed help. He always greeted everyone with a smile and a gentleman’s handshake. He loved running, reading and spending time with his family. He was well respected, a role model to his sons, and a friend to everyone he met. Coach was the founder and organizer for the Edinburg All American City 10 K run which began in 1983 and was renamed in 2019 in his honor. The David Chavana 10 K run has become the largest running event in South Texas. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will continue through his family, friends, runners and all those whose lives he touched. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

His family will receive friends on Sunday, January 4, 2026 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM with a Rosary to be prayed at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home, 322 East Kuhn Street in Edinburg. A Chapel service will be held on Monday, January 5, 2026 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of Peace at Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home. Christian burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, 1701 East Richardson Road in Edinburg. Having the distinguished honor to serve as pallbearers will be: Vito Chavana, Noah Chavana, Trey Chavana, Paul Chavana, David Chavana and Larry Chavana. Funeral services have been entrusted to Johnny Garcia, Manager/Funeral Director and staff of Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
