Chief Alfredo C. Gonzalez, 80, passed on peacefully to his eternal rest on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at his residence, 1516 Cedar Drive, Edinburg, Texas. He was born December 8, 1929 in Hebbronville, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Alfredo T. Gonzalez.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister; Margarita Gonzalez Montemayor, brothers-in-law; Rogelio Montemayor and Adan Canales.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years; Maria De La Luz Gonzalez, son; David Daniel and Laura Gonzalez, daughter; Clarissa Gonzalez Ladner, four sisters; Maria Luisa (Carlos) Garza and Nydia (Frank) Gomez of Edinburg, Rosaura Canales of Alice, Texas and Arabela (Roel) Perez of Virginia Beach, Virginia, grandchildren; Jennifer Marie Bueno, Rebecca Elizabeth Ladner, Vanessa Veronica Gonzalez, Steven Daniel Aponte, Nicholas Alfredo Gonzalez, great-granddaughters; Erin N. Bueno, Emelie Bueno and numerous nieces and nephews.

Chief Gonzalez graduated from Hebbronville High School in 1950. He attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio prior to serving in the US Army during the Korean War. After returning home he attended TX A&I University in Kingsville, Texas. Chief Gonzalez graduated from the FBI Academy NA Quantico, VA. He served as Chief of Police of Edinburg for 25 years. He also served under Governor’s Brisco, White and Clemens’ Administration on the Board for the Organized Crime Task Force. He was a past President, and member of the Board of Governors of the Texas Police Association and past president, and Board of the Texas Chapter of the FBI National Association along with other numerous charities, boards, and organizations.

Chief Gonzalez began his career in law enforcement in Kingsville, Texas and honorably performed his duties as a public servant for 33 glorious and fruitful years. Prior to his career he was a junior high coach in his hometown of Hebbronville, Texas. Chief was always competitive and one of his hobbies was coaching pony league baseball, while in Kingsville. He was fortunate to lead a team to the World Series Championship two years in a row in Monterrey, Mexico. He was in the Lions, Kiwanis and Knights of Columbus. He was a longtime member and Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. He will be deeply missed by all of his family, friends and all those who were fortunate enough to be touched by his care and concern

The Gonzalez family will receive friends today, August 10, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Christian mass will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Entombment will follow to Roselawn Cemetery and Mausoleum in McAllen. Having the honor of serving as pallbearers are Steven Daniel Aponte, Nocholas Alfredo Gonzalez, Mark Canales, J.C. Canales, Carlos Garza, Jr., Mario Javier Gonzalez and Gabriel Camarena. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Gomez, Carlos Garza, Richard Carranza, Ciro Trevino, Servando Gonzalez and Roel Perez. Funeral services have been entrusted to Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.
